Our story

Protecting consumers through transparency

Built from a personal legal dispute. Grounded in Australian, EU and UK Consumer Law regulations. Finding Nuclear-tier clauses in contracts used by billions of people worldwide.

🛡️

PROT exists because most people can't read a Terms of Service — not because they're not smart enough, but because they were never meant to. It started as one person's legal dispute that nobody would take seriously. A trained lawyer might find relevant clauses in an hour of reading. PROT finds all of them in 2 seconds.

What we stand for

The Founder

Oscar

Oscar is a fourth-year Physics and Economics student.

He began this work not as a startup, not as a product, but as a personal legal dispute that nobody would take seriously. Three years later he has produced a 25,000-word legal analysis, engaged four major international consumer protection organisations, and built a working tool with near-perfect retention that is finding Nuclear-tier clauses in contracts used by billions of people worldwide.

He is currently in the process of formally registering PROT as a company and is in early discussions with CSIRO regarding research collaboration and grant funding to scale the platform.

"This all started when the ACCC told me a EULA wasn't a standard form contract. So I went away and built the biggest legal analysis I could. Having to prove that most EULAs meet the definition of standard form contracts as defined under section 27 of the ACL."
The Significance

Oscar's case is one case. But PROT has already identified the same clause architecture across multiple contracts in multiple industries. This is not one bad actor, this is a systemic issue.

"PROT provides two really important things. The first is immediate transparency and visibility for the average person reading a consumer contract. Now you don't have to find a lawyer and send them a 25,000-word contract for basic information. The second is what it could mean for enforcement. I'd reckon you could cut a lot of working hours for underfunded enforcement agencies who get bombarded with requests, and get a more accurate representation of what's actually happening in the market. That data is all opt-in and consumer provided."

Regulators like the ACCC and ASIC operate with finite resources against an effectively infinite volume of standard form contracts updated constantly and quietly by companies with large legal teams. PROT's Contract Following system monitors those updates in real time, showing users when terms change via their dashboards, and building a longitudinal dataset of risk scores by industry and jurisdiction that could serve as one of the clearest leading indicators of structural consumer harm available to enforcement bodies anywhere in the world. That data could be snapshotted on a weekly or daily bases to create a historic data set over time.

"Not sure what they did with my original analysis. Consumer reports usually end up in a data bank. But maybe it made some change. At the end of the day, this makes more."
